Saudi Arabia and Canada usher in a new era of diplomacy as they held their first political consultations in Ottawa on Tuesday, a significant step after restoring diplomatic ties in 2023. The consultations concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), focusing on further strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.

The historic meeting was co-chaired by Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed bin Abdulkarim El-Khereiji and Canadian Deputy Foreign Minister David Morrison. Both delegations exchanged insights on various regional and international issues, reinforcing their commitment to address pressing global challenges collaboratively.

The consultations covered a range of topics, including political cooperation, economic opportunities, and avenues for enhancing trade and investment. Both sides acknowledged the tremendous potential for expanding cooperation in sectors such as energy, technology, and education.

The signed MoU is expected to provide a robust framework for institutionalized dialogue and pave the way for regular consultations. Notably, the resumption of diplomatic relations in 2023 marked a pivotal turning point, and both governments are eager to translate diplomatic engagement into concrete outcomes.

Additionally, during his visit, El-Khereiji met with senior Canadian officials, underscoring the importance of sustained engagement between the two countries. Specific outcomes of the discussions and the MoU are yet to be detailed, but observers highlight this as a critical step in rebuilding Saudi-Canadian relations.
