In an era where global trade depends on reliability, visibility, and innovation, John Sommer leads from the front. As Chair of WTA Logistic Services LLC (UAE) and WTA Energy Group, and Director of the historic WTA Group, he represents the fourth generation of a logistics legacy that began in 1913. From London to Chicago and now Dubai, the Sommer family has steered the company’s global growth, shaping bespoke solutions for complex, time-critical, and high-compliance cargo across industries, including but not limited to: Energy, Renewables, and food logistics.

Headquartered in the UK, WTA Group serves more than 6,000 customers in 122 countries, uniting freight forwarding, customs brokerage, and project cargo through its cutting-edge WTA Visibility Platform, which provides real-time tracking, analytics, and document control. Since its expansion to Dubai in 2023, the company has positioned itself at the heart of the Gulf’s dynamic logistics hub, connecting East and West through tailored, technology-driven supply chain solutions

Below, John Sommer shares insights on WTA’s expansion strategy in the UAE, the evolution of logistics in the Gulf, and how innovation and heritage continue to define the group’s success.

How was WTA Group founded, what inspired its creation, and why did  you choose the UAE as your base for regional operations?

WTA Group is a fourth-generation, family-owned freight forwarder founded in 1913. Ernest Sommer, who had years of experience in forwarding, moved from Switzerland to London and formed what was then called ‘The World Transport Agency Ltd. ‘The’ was later dropped.

We’ve grown by combining deep sector expertise with modern visibility technology and a highly personal service model. We launched WTA UAE in 2023, establishing our base in Dubai to serve as the control tower for Gulf operations and beyond.

Dubai functions as our logistical hub, coordinating and synchronising the activities of our global offices to ensure consistency, speed, and reliability. The Dubai team provides real-time visibility and decision-making, enabling us to manage complex operations across multiple geographies with precision.

Our offices in China, Malaysia, the UK, the USA, and Singapore seamlessly manage different aspects of the business. This global footprint allows us to support a broad spectrum of client needs — from FAK (Freight All Kinds) and consumer goods, to Oil & Gas, Energy, and specialised project cargo — always with Dubai as the central coordinating hub.

Could you outline WTA’s end-to-end services—from freight forwarding to specialized solutions—and highlight what truly sets you apart?

WTA provides end-to-end freight solutions — ocean, air, road, and project cargo —supported by licensed customs brokerage, global partner coverage, and our cloud-based WTA Visibility Platform (real-time tracking, documents, analytics, and invoicing). What sets us apart is that our Dubai office acts as the central control tower, integrating operations across China, Malaysia, the UK, the USA, and Singapore. This structure ensures that clients benefit from global reach with local expertise, while enjoying centralized oversight, transparent pricing, and proactive exception management.

How does WTA customize services to meet the specific needs of clients operating between the GCC and global markets?

For Gulf-based clients, our Dubai team designs lane-level playbooks aligned with regional regulations and capacity windows. As the command centre, Dubai ensures that shipments from multiple origins — including Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America — are coordinated in real time for seamless arrivals into the GCC.This control tower approach allows us to customise solutions for every client, whether they operate in energy, retail, industrial, or marine sectors.

Could you share a concrete example of a complex logistics challenge WTA solved (multi-country, time-critical, or high-compliance), and the key lessons learned?

Case Study 1: Solving a Logistics Challenge – Marine Sector

Client need: WTA Energy recently managed a project with a leading company in the marine sector, which required seamless coordination of cargo and crew movements. The challenge was not only moving essential vessel equipment on time, but also ensuring that crew changes happened without delays, often in ports with tight security protocols and variable local regulations.

Our solution: WTA established a dedicated marine logistics desk to manage both timecritical spare parts and crew travel documentation in parallel. Using our WTA Visibility Platform, we linked shipment updates directly to crew scheduling teams, so flight bookings and port transfers aligned precisely with cargo arrival time

Outcome:

  • On-time delivery: 98% of all equipment shipments arrived within the required lay-by windows, minimising costly vessel downtime.
  • Crew change efficiency: Reduced waiting time for crew replacements by up to 36 hours, thanks to synchronised customs clearance and transport arrangements.
  • Lessons learned: Success in marine logistics comes from treating crew mobility and cargo as a single integrated flow, supported by visibility tools and local port expertise.

Case Study 2:  Coordinating sea freight from North America into the Middle East

Client need: A global manufacturer required the movement of high-value, sensitive equipment across multiple jurisdictions with strict compliance requirements. The challenge involved coordinating sea freight from North America into the Middle East, managing export licenses, customs clearances, and tight delivery deadlines for installation at multiple sites.

Our solution: WTA designed an on-site plan with the consignee, combining air freight for time-critical components with sea freight for larger modules. We centralised documentation through the WTA Visibility Platform to ensure license management, customs compliance, and real-time shipment tracking. A dedicated project team worked with both origin vendors and local authorities to synchronise the deliveries.

Outcome:

  • All equipment was delivered on schedule and in compliance with international trade regulations.
  • Customs clearance times reduced by 40% through proactive documentation and pre-approvals.
  • Significant cost savings achieved by balancing urgent air shipments with planned sea freight.
  • Key lesson: early compliance mapping and multimodal flexibility are critical to managing complex, high-stakes project cargo.

What role will this division play in supporting the energy sector, and why is it a game-changer for oil, gas, and renewables in the region?

What it is & why now: WTA Energy is our specialist division for oil & gas, renewables, and energy infrastructure — with hubs in Aberdeen, Malaysia, Singapore, and Dubai, serving EPCs, IOCs/NOCs, and OEMs moving oversized modules, drilling equipment, and time-critical spares across the Gulf and beyond.

Why it’s a game-changer for the region: Energy projects demand multimodal routing, special permits, and precise coordination from free zones to remote sites. WTA Energy combines on-the-ground GCC expertise with real-time visibility, compressing lead times, de-risking customs, and protecting OPEX.

How is WTA leveraging technology and operational excellence to guarantee reliability, visibility, and cost control?

Our WTA Visibility Platform gives clients a single source of truth — milestone tracking, ETA variance alerts, document control, and live cost accruals — accessible on web and mobile. By combining this with the teams centralised oversight and proactive exceptions management, we ensure issues are identified early and resolved with the least-cost option

For companies evaluating logistics partners, what are the top three  reasons WTA Group is the best option to support growth in the Gulf?

  1. Dubai as the control tower: Centralised coordination, real-time visibility, and decision-making from the Gulf’s logistics capital.
  1. Global reach with local expertise: Offices in China, Malaysia, the UK, the USA, and Singapore, seamlessly integrated with Dubai.
  1. Proven performance: multi-country, high-compliance project deliveries, supported by transparent technology.
